Arriving at Umang Island is not difficult. This island is located at the west end of Labuan regency, Banten. If we start out from Jakarta, we will pass through several Banten provincial areas, like Serang, Pandeglang and Labuan. At Labuan – Sumur, the trip towards the tourist destination felt easier due to numerous road signs, almost every ten minutes of the car journey pointing the way to Umang Island.

From Java’s mainland, we could make out a tiny island, dense with trees and foliage in the midst of a blue sea expanse. At the front of the island, a snail shaped white building with a dome could be seen protruding out of the trees. This is Sunrise Dome building.
Building architecture has been designed following the trademark identity of this island, umang or snail. Umang is the local language’s name for snail and certainly, one would recognize this slow moving creature from perhaps, childhood experiences. Umang or snails protect their bodies by concealing it in shells and moving onto other empty shell upon growth.
Since long ago, when the local community encountered countless hermit crabs on this island, the island then acquired its current name.
Nature and Beach’s Charm
We arrived at Umang Island late afternoon and were welcomed with excellent services at the banquet hall than led to our inns.
At sunset we strolled around Umang Island enjoying the beauty of the setting sun where besides sunsets, sunrises can also be relished. Circling the five acre island by foot only took less than half an hour.
At nighttime, Umang Island became more delightful with building and lighting effects bonding into the darkness, the pounding of waves and the starry skies seemingly greeting each other. Such ambience may only be dreams of couples in love of the blend between nature’s beauty and artificial splendor.
